A Historic Night in Aid of War Years Remembered Museum
On 17th October 2025, Paul Montgomery, Chair of the Plymouth Business Charity Group, hosted a very special charity dinner in support of the War Years Remembered Museum.
The evening marked exactly 80 years since 17th October 1945, when the wartime SAS held their farewell dinner and disbandment parade at Hylands House in Essex following World War II. This remarkable dinner was held in the same historic room, connecting the past with the present.
The museum, which preserves the legacy of Lt Col Blair “Paddy” Mayne – co-founder of the SAS and a decorated war hero with four DSOs earned across North Africa, Italy, and Germany, required urgent repairs to remain open to the public.
Guests included Blair Mayne’s niece, the son of SAS veteran Johnny Coopers, the wartime driver Billy Hull, and many other distinguished veterans of the regiment. Ex-SAS Sergeant Major Billy Billingham delivered a moving speech, describing Blair Mayne as “the leader’s leader”, whose example continues to inspire modern-day soldiers.
The evening featured an exceptional auction of rare SAS memorabilia, expertly conducted by Bruce Compton, raising an impressive £24,000 (after costs) for the museum.
It was a truly memorable evening, honouring history, celebrating heroism, and supporting a vital piece of our heritage.
